Former Sandy resident Lloyd Earl Long, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 17, in Battle Ground, Wash.
A celebration of his life was held Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Country Club Estates Recreation Hall in Gresham.
Lloyd was born April 22, 1925, in Mansfield, Ark., to Brady Bradford Long and Martha Madora Hart as one of 12 children. The family moved to Texas and then to the Gresham and Boring area in the 1940s, where they found work in the Kaiser Shipyards, the Oregon Bulb Farm, Reynolds Metals and with Kelly Falkner Berry Farms.
In 1943, 17-year-old Lloyd joined the Marine Corps, lying about his age. He and his brother, Arthur, served in the 3rd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater, which fought at Iwo Jima and other battles. They returned home in 1947. Lloyd married Crystal Beller, a classmate of his brother Arthur’s wife.
Lloyd and his brothers started working in road construction. They often moved with their families throughout the state to find work on road construction jobs. In the late 1950s, Lloyd became a deputy with Multnomah County Animal Control. He left the job shortly after he and Crystal divorced in 1970.
On Dec. 15, 1981, Lloyd married Glenda Giberson. They made their homes in the Sandy and Gresham areas before moving to Battle Ground about 10 years ago.
Lloyd enjoyed hunting deer, elk and ducks with his brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Glenda of Battle Ground; daughter, Donna Marie Ghierson of Lake Oswego; stepsons, Larry Giberson of Bend and David Giberson of Battle Ground; stepdaughter, Teresa Eastburn of Battle Ground; youngest sister, Loretta Morris of Sandy; and five grandchildren.
