A landslide on the west end of Sandy that undercut a portion of Highway 26 has been an annoyance for the thousands of motorists who pass through the city every day.
Thankfully, the fix for the highway is considered an emergency repair, which will allow the project to take approximately two to three months to complete, as opposed to two years, said Christine Miles, spokeswoman for the Oregon Department of Transportation.
“We are trying to hit the ground running on this one,” Miles said.
Miles reported the design phase of the project should be complete by the first week in February. ODOT is still determining the geological fix, which will impact the final design. The final design will include relocating underground utilities in the area, including water, gas and electricity.
In the meantime, ODOT lowered the speed limit in the affected area to 30 mph to help alleviate potential congestion. Miles also reported preventive measures have stopped further erosion under the highway.
