Sandy police officer submits resignation

ADVERTISEMENTS

Sandy Police Officer William Bergin has resigned from the police department effective Friday, Oct. 24.

Bergin was placed on paid administrative leave in July while the department looked into information revealed during the investigation of Clackamas County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Claggett, who also has resigned.

A report on Bergin has been filed with the Clackamas County District Attorney’s office, but no further information was available.

Police Chief Harold Skelton said Bergin resigned voluntarily to pursue a job in the private sector.

“He was a good officer,” Skelton said. “I don’t know everything that was going on with him.”

Bergin was placed on leave on three occasions in less than three years, including once for an internal investigation following his role in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Gresham man Fouad Kaady in 2005.

He was paid medical/worker’s compensation leave in January 2007. A Clackamas County grand jury and subsequent internal investigation cleared Bergin of wrongdoing in the Kaady shooting.

Skelton noted that the department will hire another officer, but not immediately.
