A climber was rescued from Mount Hood after he fell while descending the mountain Sunday afternoon, July 6.
Shortly after reaching the summit with his group of 11, 35-year-old Erik Scott Heerlein slipped during a steep descent.
Heerlein, of Portland, tumbled about 200 feet into the Devil’s Kitchen area at the 10,000-foot level of the mountain.
Team members who witnessed the fall said Heerlein appeared to be unconscious as he tumbled “like a rag doll.”
Clackamas County dispatchers received a cell phone call from a fellow climber at about 10:23 a.m., telling authorities that Heerlein had suffered a “serious” head injury.
Several members of the climbing team – which included a physician and a paramedic – and two members of another team reached Heerlein quickly and were able to stabilize him and assess his condition.
They discovered that Heerlein – who regained consciousness – had broken his leg, suffered a number of cuts and suffered a “worrisome” head injury, which made time an important factor in the rescue.
